The Ford Expedition has always been a large, rugged vehicle full of utility features to make it a great choice for hauling people or cargo wherever needed. This is one of the only body on frame SUVs left on the market and still gives you the power and performance you want. Even though its size and build make it a more difficult drive than a crossover SUV the Expedition has always offered some of the most enjoyable features on the market to ensure you can have an SUV that not only gets you where you want to go but does so in style and comfort.
The most important part of any great large SUV (and trucks) is the power that is offered. What makes the Expedition amazing is the fact it has a 3.5-liter twin turbocharged V6 as its only engine offering. No V8 or larger, no diesel option, just this simple V6 to give you up to 365 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and with 4WD available on every trim this big hauler can actually give you better fuel mileage than you might expect. Not only will this beast haul up to 9,200 pounds but it offer the fuel mileage that comes in at 16 city/22 hwy mpg for the 2WD, 15 city/21 hwy mpg for the 2WD EL, 15 city/20 hwy mpg for the 4WD and 14 city/20 hwy on the 4WD EL model.
So what do you see when you look at the Expedition? You see an SUV that is large and ready to take on the world. Whatever the task the Expedition is up to the challenge, but don’t you want more? Certainly there is more, this is one of the only box-styled SUVs left; with beautiful chrome accents all over the vehicle. With updates to the front and rear fascia this is an SUV that looks even better than ever before. Ride along on some large wheels and show off your massive new best friend in this beautiful new 2016 Expedition.
On the inside the Expedition offers three rows of seats for eight passengers to sit comfortably. The difference between the two body lengths is in the cargo space as both versions offer the same amount of leg room throughout the vehicle. For the standard model you get 18.6 cubic feet of cargo room and the EL will give you a massive 42.6 cubic feet behind the third row. The controls and style up front give you the feeling of riding along in a luxury vehicle rather than one that carries the Ford oval on the front. This is certainly a cabin you can experience a massive amount of joy when driving, while parked or just to admire the great choice in vehicles you have made.
Taking the Expedition out for a drive allows you the fun and flexibility of going on and off road. With three different driving modes, Comfort, Normal and Sport you can choose how the chassis and suspension respond. The electronically controlled shock help to smooth out the ride and give you a better feeling than you would have from a normal box on frame SUV. You do have to remember this is a large SUV and you will need to have plenty of space for making a U-turn, but otherwise this SUV offers a driving feeling of being up high, in charge of the road and ready to tackle the next job or head out to your favorite spot for a weekend full of fun.
As a large SUV that can tow a heavy load the Expedition never runs out of breath and seems to be able to haul the family and the gear with ease. Using the 4WD makes it easy to tackle some great trails and find a remote location to sit out under the stars. For 2016 this SUV has added SYNC3 to most of the lineup along with a touch screen. This is the only real change because this SUV gained the new engine and a plethora of interior and exterior upgrades only a year ago showing that this SUV is on the right track to offer what you need.
With such a large SUV you do hope to gain a great deal of great features, there’s certainly plenty of room for them. There are four trims for this SUV, XLT, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum. The standard features include a six-way power driver’s seat, power adjustable pedals, a leather wrapped steering wheel, a rearview camera, a six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connective and a USB port and nine cupholders. The Limited model adds leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, twenty-inch wheels, a power liftgate and the SYNC 3 system. The King Ranch upgrades the leather and brings in blind spot monitoring, a navigation system, power deployable running boards and the exterior chrome accents.
As for the optional features, they are mostly found at the top of the trim levels, the Platinum. This trim brings in a power moonroof, a leather and wood console, stainless running boards and micro-perforated upholstery. Options that are available across all trims include the 4WD, the longer wheelbase, a tow package that will increase the XLT towing ability to the 9,200 pounds from the 6,600 normally found in this model, a navigation system, the moonroof, second row bucket seats, a Sony premium audio system, and 22-inch wheels.
The expectation with so much truck even at the base price is a fairly high starting point, but the Expedition is reasonably priced at $46,000 to start at the 2WD XLT. The longer wheelbase will start at $49,000 and the 4WD will increase the price by $3,000. Heading to the other end of the range the Platinum starts at $62,000 and can reach a little over $70,000 with all the options added.
