2022 Mazda MX-30: An Electric Mazda has Arrived

The first entry into the electric vehicle world for the brand that brought us “zoom zoom” is the new 2022 Mazda MX-30.

This name suggests we have a subcompact crossover SUV that will be powered entirely by electricity, giving us the environmentally-friendly drive desired to go along with all the Mazda goodness that we love. You’ll certainly admire the graceful styling and the fun driving dynamics that make this vehicle right for you.

Speculating the Range

The battery pack being used for the MX-30 is a 35.5-kWh model which is much smaller than most of the competition. This could be a serious sticking point when you want to purchase an electric SUV. While most of the competitors use batteries that are much larger, you could enjoy the short range of the MX-30, which might be as low as 100 miles on a full charge, if you spend most of your time on city streets.

Hold Your Horses…

Seeing the Mazda MX-30 name may offer thoughts of a sporty little vehicle that would be in the same name family as the MX-5 Miata, but that’s not the case at all. This SUV will have the driving dynamics you expect from Mazda including G-Vectoring Control Plus but that doesn’t make it a sports car. Of course, because this is an EV, you’ll have instant torque to give you the acceleration you desire.

Going the Environmental Route in the Cabin

Sustainable materials are being used in the cabin area of this new SUV. You’ll find items like cork that is in the center console along with fibers made from recycled plastic bottles in the door panels. Unlike other EVs, the MX-30 will have a conventional-looking dashboard with the driver instrument cluster and a seven-inch touchscreen that looks normal to you. The front seats are great for adults, but the rear should be reserved for kids and might turn this little SUV into a coupe with a large cargo area.

You’ll See True Mazda Styling in the MX-30

The silhouette of this little SUV is unmistakable. This is a Mazda and it brings you the smooth lines and flowing curves you expect to find. You’ll see a new chrome strip at the base of the rear pillar that has the Mazda name embossed in it and you can select a roof that is the same color as the body or a contrasting color to give you the look you desire.

The Driving Dynamics Will Grab You

Pairing Mazda Driving Dynamics with an electric motor is something that should have happened before now. With this vehicle, we finally have what we want with the capability to rocket through a corner, brake with controlled speed, and head hard down the straight areas of the road. This is certainly a fun SUV to drive and that might be enough for you.

Expected Items for the Mazda MX-30

It’s still early in the process and we don’t have all the details of this new Mazda yet, but we do know some of the expected items you’ll see. You should find Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a pair of USB ports, and the seven-inch touchscreen. You’ll also likely see a full package of safety features to make sure you can stay out of trouble when on the road.

There may be optional safety items like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control or other added items which could be satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a set of heated front seats. A powered tailgate is likely one of the options that could make the list as well.

How Much Power Will You Have?

If you choose to drive the Mazda MX-30, you’ll have an electric motor and the small 35.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This pairing gives you 144 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque which is more than enough power to get you going. With a DC Fast Charger, you can reach eighty percent of the battery capacity in only 30 minutes to continue driving this fun and active SUV.

Will You Choose the MX-30?

This will be a tough question for you to answer, and until we know the full driving range of this SUV, it might not be one you want to answer. The fun, style, dynamics, and electrification of the Mazda MX-30 might be enough for you, but if you want more driving range, that could be a sticking point. Check out this new EV at any of your local Mazda car dealerships and experience it for yourself.
