5 SUVs that are Large and In Charge

Whether you’ve got a big family or are just living large, here are five SUVs that are versatile giants. Which one will dominate your driveway?

For those who have big needs (and a relatively big-budget), these five large and in charge full-size SUVs are worth clearing space in your garage.

1. Chevrolet Suburban

It’s the great-granddaddy of SUVs. The Chevrolet Suburban boasts the oldest continuous nameplate in the automobile industry, going all the way back to the mid-1930s.

Today’s Suburban can seat nearly an entire soccer team with room in the back for their gear. This super-size SUV also pulls well over 8,000 pounds. Like many vehicles on the list, the price can get a little steep once you start adding feature packages. But you can find some fantastic deals on a used Chevy Suburban.

2. GMC Yukon XL

If you’re shopping in the Big & Tall section of your dealership’s showroom, you’ll find the GMC Yukon XL. This big brother to the Yukon is over 15 inches longer than its sibling, with an astonishing amount of third-row legroom (36.7 inches) and 41.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat (expands to an eye-popping 145 cubes with the second and third-row seats folded).

Its towing capacity tops out at 8,300 pounds, but with all of that cargo room, you can easily bring your camping gear and tow a boat or camper. The Yukon XL is comparably priced with the Suburban, and used ones are becoming more readily available.

3. Toyota Land Cruiser

All of the large SUVs on our list have available all-wheel drive, but if you’re looking for serious off-road capability, the Toyota Land Cruiser should be on the top of your auto shopping list.

It doesn’t have as much cargo capacity as its rivals, but you can expand the cargo hold by stowing the third-row seats along the side of the cabin. The Land Cruiser’s towing capability is on par with the other extra-large SUVs. Speaking of extra-large, the Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the priciest three-row SUVs on our list.

4. Ford Expedition

If your kids are still in car seats, the Ford Expedition is for you. The Expedition offers the easiest access to LATCH anchors of the five SUVs that made our list. And even with safety seats installed in the second row, the third row is easy to reach.

The Expedition doesn’t boast the same cargo capacity as its GM rivals (though you can get more space by upgrading to the Max version). But with up to 9,300 pounds of towing capability, you can pull a relatively large trailer.

5. Cadillac Escalade

We’re not going to sugar-coat this: to get your hands on a new Cadillac Escalade requires a king-size budget. But you’re going to get a lot for your money. Newer models come with a long list of high-tech features, and it’s the most luxurious SUV on our list.

You and your passengers will have more than enough space to stretch out and stow all your gear. It also comes in an extra-large ESV trim which adds 17.4 cubic feet to the 25.5 cu. ft. cargo hold. A brand-new upper-level trim will run you into six figures, but a pre-owned Caddy might make the price more manageable.
