Do you remember the original BMW M1? If you’re younger than 45 years old, you probably don’t remember what the first M-car was.
The BMW M1 went out of production in 1981 and it was the only stand-alone M model that was offered from the brand. Here we are, thirty-eight years later, and we still don’t have an answer to whether or not BMW will offerus an M car that has no standard model. It certainly seems high time this brand and the M division gave us a new model that will offer the power and athleticism we want to see on the track.
A Hint, but that is All
The head of the M Division of BMW has hinted that there might be a car offered in the future that has no predecessor or standard variant, but this is only a hint. The potential is present to produce an M car that hasn’t been seen in the past and doesn’t ride as a regular model, but this is still something that the team is investigating. While we’re in the very early phase of this conversation, it seems that this would be an easy product for this team.
Will BMW Offer a Supercar?
The team of the M Division developed a prototype supercar whine the first BMW 8 Series appeared. This car was an M8 that was fitted with the BMW V12 engine from the McLaren F1 but it never made it to the production line at all. Since that time, the possibility of a new M1 appeared and we were told thiscar was in development for more than 11 years, but the team chose to focus on the new planned models and has stuck with the idea of the i8 being the halo ca for the brand.
Last year, the conversation of a supercar gained traction to the point that the BMWM Division leader discussed this possibility. The idea is to create a supercar and not a hypercar. BMW feels the M Division and M name are strong enough without going too far and a supercar might be the peak of what they plan to offer, which would be great for us. Of course, we’d also like a new M1 that is a stand-alone M Division model that we can experience at the track.
What’s the Timetable for BMW?
There isn’t actually any timetable for when the new BMW M car will arrive, but the fact that 2022 marks the 50thanniversary of the M department being an independent company means that could be when we see this new model. Hopefully, we’ll get to see some of a new M supercar testing around Germany before it arrives, and hopefully, this new car will arrive for this anniversary year. It’s time for the question to be answered and the long wait to be over so that we can have a great new car that is only part of the M performance brand from BMW.
