08.10.16 - Something

Auction sites are pretty cool with ways for you to purchase items you might otherwise shop for in the store for a much lower price. Some auction sites are all about the savings and have a volume of items for you to choose while others offer you a different approach to buying and selling with one item from a seller at a time. These types of auction sites can sometimes attract a few interesting items that bring back a wide variety of memories and even a bit of history for an industry with items that might have been otherwise discarded.

If you thought making your latest eBay purchase was cool you should check out this beauty which was offered on Bring a Trailer. The item is a car, but it’s not just any car. This is the vehicle called “Something” and it was built from a surplus WWII tank that was made for aircrafts and then retrofitted with the necessary parts to be a racing machine. Something rides with a turbocharged four-cylinder Pontiac motor with a three speed transmission that’s attached to the front wheels. It’s not often that we speak about a race car that’s FWD, but this is one time we certainly will.

The car was built in the early 1960s and was raced as early as 1962 by the builders Jerry Silverstein, Julian Doty and Arnold Birner. There is no doubt this car was made to reach top speeds on dry lake events or at the salt flats. On the inside you can see aerospace-style gauges and a steering wheel that seems to fit an airplane much better than a race car. Once you get past the engine and interior you will notice this tubular shape on open wheels is perfect for racing.

Although Something hasn’t run since 1989 when it was put in storage it has been capable of reaching high speeds at various SCTA events and the current owners state if it was restored this car could compete once again. To prove its might there is a display frame with pictures from the races this car ran including one shot which shows the car reaching speeds of 224.7 mph in 1986. If nothing else this car would certainly be an amazing conversation piece and a piece of history that anyone can love and admire whether it’s in the garage or out on a dry lakebed leaving the rest of the world behind.

What’s the catch? You have to bring the trailer and haul Something away with you, but with a car that has been around the various SCTA events from many years ago and a picture history to go along with it this could be the start of a car museum for some local enthusiast or it could become a car that’s a lot of fun to take a few turns in around your local track where nothing else like it will be driving, no matter the type of race that’s offered.
