The Bugatti Veyron is one of the most admired and sought after vehicles that was ever built and this car is only surpassed on the market but the new model from Bugatti which is the new Chiron. The Veyron was made to be able to reach a top speed of 267.8 mph in the Super Sport trim without ever overheating. This makes the Veyron one of the most highly accomplished models to ever make its way to the production line with this amazing high speed and the awesome way it’s built to amaze us and have the ride that’s perfect for driving at the track or on the road.
The biggest question that has been posed regarding the Veyron was why this car couldn’t reach 300 mph. The challenge puts us in a bit of a catch-22 position where an increase in one area of the car causes a negative effect even though you’re looking for a positive result. it would take a much higher horsepower number to make this car reach 300 mph, but that would also require more cooling of the engine which means more air is being sent to the engine. The more air you send to the engine to cool it the more drag you’re adding to the vehicle which will slow it down.
The standard build of the Veyron has a drag coefficient of 0.36 Cd which is the same as the massive hulking SUV of the Cadillac Escalade. Doesn’t it seem like a more aerodynamic build with a lower drag would be needed to create the faster speed that you want to achieve? Of course it does, but this drag is created to push the right amount of air into the engine to properly cool the engine so it doesn’t blow up.
the current Veyron that can reach the high speed it already offers comes with 1000 horsepower but this car would near nearly 1800 horsepower in order to reach the impressive speed of 300 mph. That’s an insane increase in the number and we’ve already been told the Chiron may come close, but it won’t reach the 300 mph mark either. This number is theoretically possible with less power if you have the aerodynamics, but you would blow the engine because of the lack of cooling, which is a huge factor when you consider the desire to reach this speed while also maintaining the vehicle for another drive.
There are some other factors that have to be accounted for as well when looking for this massive power, but all factors could be overcome in order to make a Bugatti that can reach the speed of 300 mph. Check out this video from Engineering Explained and see some of the math that has to do with the drive and power that would be required to have the Bugatti Veyron reach the massive speed that we’ve set. It’s possible we’ll see a production car that can reach this amazing speed but that might still be a few years away for Bugatti.
