GM is Retiring a Few Models in 2023

As GM continues its push towards an increased lineup of EV models, the automaker is planning to retire quite a few models soon.

The Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore are two related subcompact crossovers that are rumored to be discontinued by the end of 2023. The models are likely to be replaced with EV crossover models of a similar size.

More GM Models Likely to Retire

Automotive News reports that the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore will be discontinued by the end of 2023. It’s also expected that the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV will be discontinued by the end of 2023 and 2024 respectively. The main reason for axing these EV models is to replace them with new models that utilize GM’s superior Ultium technology. The Chevy Camaro is also strongly rumored to be ended by 2023 or 2024 with no new generation before then. It too will likely be replaced with an EV performance sedan.

For the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore, it’s not too surprising that GM is seeking to replace them. Both crossovers debuted in the 2013 model year, which means they will both be a decade old when GM discontinues them in 2023. Furthermore, GM already has two similar offerings in the Chevy Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX. Both of these vehicles have only been out for a few years, so they’re more likely to continue for a while.

Upcoming EV Crossovers

In November of 2020, GM unveiled one such Chevy EV crossover at the Barclays 2020 Global Automotive Conference. This EV crossover was a compact model with a rounded front fascia featuring narrow lights. The whole profile of the car was streamlined with a flowing roofline. Assuming this crossover eventually debuts, it’s likely to be one of the most affordable EV models from GM. This makes it further likely that it will more or less replace the Chevrolet Trax.

GM already has a Buick EV model that it only sells in China. The Buick Velite 7 is a subcompact crossover with a streamlined front and a slight resemblance to the Buick Encore, but it’s actually built on the same platform as the Chevy Bolt EV.

What’s Next?

GM ultimately has a long list of potential EV models across all of its brands. For Chevy, it’s expected that EV models will include a full-size pickup, a compact crossover, and midsize crossover, as well as multiple sedans. For Buick, both compact and midsize crossover models appear to be in the works. For Cadillac,

GM has two EV models already planned and named with the Lyriq and Celestiq. The Lyriq is expected for the 2023 model year at the earliest. Other possible Cadillac models include replacements for the Escalade, the XT6, the XT4, as well as several sedans.

With such a bold plan towards an EV future, it’s inevitable that several current GM gas-powered vehicles will be discontinued in the near future.
