Electric vehicles are coming in hot and coming on strong. Before you know it, Lexus will be a brand that only offers EV models in its lineup.
When that happens, the loud growl and grumble of the impressive V8 engines used by this brand to power some of its luxury sport models will be no more. While some will certainly lament this change, there are going to be much more positive qualities to a luxury vehicle lineup that is completely made of EV models when the time comes.
You have a Few Years Still
The movement away from gasoline engines to electric powertrains is not going to take place overnight. Toyota is ramping its production schedule to give us 30 new electric vehicles by the end of the decade. This is double the number that was originally planned, which was 15 EV models by 2025, giving us more electrification to look forward to. Additionally, the brand expects to sell 3.5 million EV models globally by 2030 and will move the Lexus brand away from internal combustion engines to be an EV-only brand by 2035.
What you can glean from this is that the clock is ticking, and you will see more luxury electric vehicles going forward, but the date for a complete change isn’t right around the corner.
Backing the Commitment with Cash
To make the new electric lineup a reality, Toyota has announced it will increase its overall investment into the development and research needed to bring about this change. The original investment was to be $13.6 billion, but now that number has grown to $17.6 billion. This money will go into the battery vehicle technology, product development, and the transformation of the Lexus brand to fit the new goal.
The LF-Z Could be Amazing
One Lexus EV model that is already in the works is the LF-Z. This vehicle is an electric crossover that should be ready to be part of the 2025 model year. This will be an all-electric model offered by this brand. When it arrives, it will carry the futuristic design that we expect to find with many of the new models that will be part of this luxury movement forward.
While technically a crossover, the LF-Z brings an evolutionary design that could give us the feeling that it’s a sedan, hatchback, and crossover all in one. The rear shows off a horizontal light strip while the roof appears to float above the vehicle. We will see pop-out door handles, side-view mirror cameras, deep-dish wheels, and illuminated badges that will never let anyone forget what this new crossover happens to be.
Inside, this new Lexus EV will offer one-piece bucket seats, deeply scalloped rear seats, a yoke-style steering wheel, and floor-level accent lighting. Overall, this vehicle will fit right in with what we expect to see when the 2025 model year rolls around. We don’t yet know exactly what the electric powertrain will offer, so we will leave that top for a future discussion.
All Lexus, All EV, By 2025?
Wait a minute; didn’t we already tell you the Lexus brand wouldn’t change to a fully-electric brand until 2035? Why then such a teaser of a headline for this section? The reason is by the year 2025, all models in the Lexus lineup will have at least one hybrid or EV variant offered. This is the first step in allowing us to get used to the idea that this brand is going to be fully electric only a decade after this date. What we will see by 2025 are ten new hybrid, plug-in, and battery-electric vehicles that wear the Lexus brand name.
Concept Models to Take Lexus to the Future
Toyota has already announced four concept models that are part of the EV future for their luxury brand. These four Lexus vehicles have only been offered as renderings or concepts thus far, but by the end of the decade, they will join the LF-Z in the lineup.
Let’s take a quick look at these new concept vehicles.
Lexus Electric Sedan
The futuristic build of this sedan offers shapely design elements, uninterrupted body lines, and a style that goes on for days. The athletic stance given allows us to think this model could be the same size as the GS that we know now. The sedan, in the rendering, rides on large wheels and offers a build that can certainly signify luxury electric driving for the future.
Lexus Electric Three-Row SUV
This model just might share a platform with the upcoming electric Toyota bz5X. The size is nearly identical, which gives away that possibility. As you would expect, this new electric SUV offers a beautiful front end, shapely side body elements, and a sporty build while being large enough to fit your entire family. This might be the EV version of the Lexus RX that we have right now.
Lexus RZ450e, the First to Arrive
Before the end of 2022, we expect to see the first electric crossover with the Lexus brand name on it. This vehicle will be the RZ450e. The Toyota version it shares a platform with will be the bz4X, but we’re looking at the RZ450e and thinking it will have more power than the 215 rated for the Toyota model.
The sharp design, clean lines, and narrow lighting elements certainly fit into what we’re expecting to find in the Lexus lineup going forward. Get ready; the first electrified Lexus is almost here.
Lexus Electrified Sports Car
The LFA is going to be hard to replace, and the amazing engine noise will certainly be missed. That being said, Lexus promises an EV sports car that will take the place of the LFA and bring extreme speed and performance to your drive. You’ll want to schedule some time at the track when this new sporty electric Lexus arrives on the scene.
Are you looking forward to the Lexus electrified lineup? Will you look to this brand for your future EV driving needs? By the end of this year, we’ll have the first model, and then we can revisit the subject of whether or not we want to experience Lexus without any engine noise.
