The Mazda lineup of vehicles is one of the most exciting to drive from top to bottom. These vehicles have the energy others don’t and enjoy the increased benefits of the SkyActiv technology that’s aboard. When you get behind the wheel of a Mazda vehicle you know you’re in for a ride that feels amazing and provides you with the driving experience you want with a connected to the road feel and an acceleration that’s been unmatched on the market thus far. The Mazda name carries the mantra of “zoom zoom” to the heights it should go to give us the ride we’re looking for.
Because we know how exciting a Mazda vehicle is right now, the idea of the Mazda RX-Vision Concept becoming the new production RX-9 was an idea that brought us tons of joy and excited anticipation. This was similar to the feeling we received when presented with news of an upcoming event that we want to participate in or the excitement a child shows just before Christmas. Not only did we expect to see this new larger and long sports car become the next in the RX series, but we also expected it to come equipped with the rotary engine.
News from Mazda is they are stopping the development of the large sports car for now. Without an actual reason why, the Mazda CEO stated the sports car they have now is the one that offers the most exhilarating for the consumer. Currently the model on the market is the MX-5 Miata which offers us either a 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter engine an impressive amount of acceleration and the drive that does make a huge difference. Although the Miata is an exciting and admirable choice why would Mazda stop the large sports car from coming to life?
It may have something to do with the rotary engine. This engine is one that doesn’t offer much in the way of fuel efficiency. In fact, the rotary engine isn’t fuel efficient at all. This is an engine that uses a smaller build but is made in such a way that gas and oil are wasted in the process on a regular basis. When asked if the rotary engine would continue, the Mazda CEO said they needed to develop a rotary engine that offered more fuel efficiency and was able to adhere to current and upcoming emissions regulations. This means the car needs to have the ride we need an offer the ability to perform to standards given.
The development of the rotary engine does seem to be continuing, but unlike the rotary engine, we might have seen the last in the RX Series of vehicles when the RX-8 finally stopped production. Whether or not Mazda continues to try and get into the large sports car market is yet to be seen, but the fact that they are still working on the rotary engine gives us a glimmer of hope for both the engine and for the sports car that we want to drive and love.
