For the 2019 model year, the Nissan Leaf is upgraded even more and will bring us a vehicle that’s called the Leaf E-Plus.
Many people turn over a new leaf, Nissan gives us one to drive. The 2018 model year showed the second generation of the most popular EV on the market offered as a new model.
This moniker is a nod to the entry into the Formula E racing program that’s part of what the Nissan team will participate in for the future. This new Leaf is certainly one you can turn to for the EV driving you’re going to need.
Getting Closer to the Competition in the Nissan Leaf
When the Nissan Leaf arrived for 2018 it didn’t have the range of the Chevrolet Bolt EV or the rabid following of the Tesla Model 3, but it did bring a sensible new build, a variety of amazing electronics, and more safety features than you’ll ever need. The only drawback for the Leaf compared to the Bolt had to do with the range. With the Tesla Model 3 still struggling through any form of production, the Leaf has to set its sights on the Bolt EV as the one it wants to compete with.
The new Leaf E-Plus is one that will be able to reach up and come close to what the Bolt has to offer. This new model will make use of a larger battery to give the car a boost in power over the current 40 kWh version. The base Leaf is one that offers 142 horsepower for the drive. While this is enough to get the car going and give you a great drive, this new model will offer you up to 200 horsepower. Along with more horsepower, you’re going to have more range.
Nissan Won’t Share
So far, we don’t know when the new Nissan Leaf E-Plus will make it to the market, we don’t know exactly the range it will offer, and we don’t know if a Nismo version will eventually be sold. These are all things that Nissan is keeping to themselves, but what we do know is the E-Plus will be part of the 2019 model year and that it should have at least 200 miles of range on tap, which puts it closer to the neighborhood of the Bolt EV that it competes with.
Racing for Nissan
Nissan has sold more EVs than any other automaker and that means it should be a shoo-in to be one of the brands on the track during Formula E racing. Right now, Nissan is at the beginning of the development of its racing team, but with the long history this brand has with electric vehicles, they can expect to have some serious success right away. Look for the new Leaf E-Plus to be offered at dealerships in the near future and keep your eyes open to see the new Nissan Formula E racing models as this team takes their expertise to the track.
