The 2025 Toyota 4Runner: Entering a New Era

It’s been 15 years since the Toyota 4Runner saw a redesign. But when Toyota decides to do something, they do it right. We might have had to wait for a new generation 4Runner, but it was worth it. Enter the 2025 Toyota 4Runner with next-level refinement, more capability than ever, and even more variety.

It Starts with a New Platform and Better Power

As Toyota updates its SUVs, they arrive on the new TNGA-F platform. The 4Runner is no different, essentially making it an SUV version of the Tacoma pickup. It has similar mechanical parts and a similar style, and the configurations are also very similar.
There was nothing really wrong with the old 4Runner’s power, but we won’t miss the outgoing V-6 and five-speed transmission. The new generation is motivated by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that not only gets 278 horsepower but also works with a modern eight-speed transmission. A hybrid system is available if you want to bump up horsepower to 326 while increasing efficiency.

More Trims Than You Can Count

There are now nine, yes, nine 4Runner trims. This includes two new additions – the overland-ready Trailhunter and the upscale Platinum. The Trailhunter has bronze-finished wheels, Old Man Emu off-road shocks, and color-selectable fog lights. It also has an air intake snorkel, just in case you need to make your way through a water crossing. The Arb roof rack gives you plenty of storage space for all your gear.
The Platinum is the plushest trim in the 4Runner lineup. It has premium leather upholstery for you to sit on, and your rear-seat passengers will appreciate their heated seats on a winter adventure.

More Safety Features for Your Protection

Safety continues to be Toyota’s top priority. The latest 4Runner comes with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced driver aids. This means you get a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high-beam headlights, and lane-tracing assist.
Safety Sense 3.0 now comes with Proactive Driving Assist. It provides some extra help behind the wheel with gentle braking as you head into curves and steering help to make sure you stay right in your lane where you belong.

Technology Upgrades for Your Driving Pleasure

While the 8-inch touchscreen still sits in the dashboard, if you have the entry-level trims, you can get a huge 14-inch touchscreen in the TRD Sport Premium and above. It uses wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to make it easy to connect your phone to the 4Runner.
Charging your phone is as easy as placing it on the wireless charger, and if you need to plug in a laptop for work or a light or appliance while out on the trails, you’ll have two household-style outlets. The new Platinum has new tech, too. A digital smartphone key gives you remote access to your SUV, and a head-up display will display all kinds of important information right within your line of sight while you drive.
