Wouldn’t you love to be able to race your vintage car somewhere it would be appreciated? How about being able to see and enjoy some of the most impressive cars in existence today? The Race of Gentlemen (TROG) offers a great way for anyone with the right vehicle or just the desire to see these awesome machines to get the opportunity to fully enjoy the amazing racing that happens during one of these events. Every car is one from the prewar days giving you plenty of amazing vehicles to admire and enjoy along the beaches where these cars race.
The idea came to the founders when reading a book about the history of racing. Racing cars began on the beaches of the world where we actually had flat surfaces of packed sand to race on and make the speed something that was fun and exciting. Rather than having a wall or barrier to run into when the vehicle is out of control, on the beach racers are able to run into some soft sand or into the ocean to still salvage the vehicle as much as possible in order to keep from needing a full rebuild.
The prewar models that were able to be built and brought here for racing was originally vehicles you would normally only see at car shows in parking lots all spiffed up with polish and shine. This was what the founders wanted to get away from and what better way to do so than to find a place where the originals such as Henry Ford were racing when they were younger. This brought them to the beaches of New Jersey as they came up with the name of the race as TROG to make the beach the best place to race their vintage vehicles that haven’t been gussied up for a show.
The demographic is widespread with guys who are eighteen racing against others who are eighty. There are vendors all over the place and what you see are roadster and rat rods racing alongside motorcycles to give you the glory of the early days of racing and the early days of automotive technology. You won’t find a computer operated machine anywhere in these races, instead, what you get is a wide variety of amazing vehicles that have bene restored back to the glory days of driving to be some of the most impressive and exciting models you can see.
There is even a Wall of Death for those daring enough to watch the ride. The Wall of Death is a circular track that offers vertical walls for the rider of a motorcycle to get up enough speed to circle the wall part of the track over and over. This death defying track is one of the coolest things you can see and this particular one was built in 1938 and is the oldest still functioning Wall of Death in the world. This is something to behold as one of the favorite attractions at TROG.
The guys who build and founded TROG aren’t in it for the money. They are in it for the cars, for the fun, for the time at the beach and for the crowd. All they want is to put on a great show and enjoy a lot of fun during their two day event at the beach where the racing and the fun of driving fast all began back in the early days of racing. After watching this video you certainly will want to be part of the event next year to at least enjoy the racing and the atmosphere which is amazing.
