When you think of Aston Martin the first thing most of us think of is James Bond. In nearly every movie the feature car was some form of an Aston Martin vehicle and the marriage between Britain’s super spy and the car company has been one that has benefitted both for several decades. Now it seems Aston Martin is upgrading some of its models, which is to be expected, but as you might expect of a company that is featured in spy films so much, most if the information has been kept under wraps thus far.
What we do know is the new DB11 will show up sometime next year. This is to be the successor to the DB9 and certainly the new DB11 will be featured somewhere in the next Bond movie to give us a look at the pure sexy beauty that Aston Martin has created. What is really new for this car is the news that there may be a version of it that will come powered by a turbocharged V8 engine. You might simply say “so what?” to this information, but keep in mind Aston Martin is well known for using naturally aspirated V12 engines and scoffing at the turbocharging that others have already embraced.
Other news that we have learned recently is the company filed a trademark application for the name Aeroblade under the category of “passenger cars and racing cars and parts and fittings therefor”. What does this mean? It most likely means there will be a parts package that is to increase the aerodynamics of one or more vehicles in the Aston Martin lineup that will use the name of Aeroblade. Currently the thought on this is that it will be for some dynamic rear spoiler for a sports car that might be a retractable one or a massive wing that resembles the spoilers found on the McLaren models.
The Aeroblade might make perfect sends on the Vulcan because of the development money that has been put into this sports car so far to make it a dynamic production model to be enjoyed. Of course that is purely speculation so far, but it makes sense to call an aero package of some kind the Aeroblade to make it sound more cutting edge and have the name protected as the new lineup from Aston Martin is preparing to be offered to us to review and enjoy.
No matter what the Aeroblade is or what powertrain is under the new DB11 you can bet these parts and vehicles will be astounding. Aston Martin has always been about beauty, grace and fluidity of movement across their cars. Volume is not their goal; its showing us what happens when imagination and ingenuity combine in a sophisticated and elegant manner. We can look forward to what these names will mean and what the lineup will look like as we prepare for the next series of car shows and Aston Martin looks to see their vehicles featured in the next version of James Bond saving the world as he has done so many times before already.
