It’s official. Mazda has confirmed that the next generation Mazda CX-5 will we available with a hybrid powertrain. The CX-50 will also a get a hybrid powertrain, with the setup sourced from Toyota, but the CX-5 will be developed by Mazda. This is exciting news, since the Mazda lineup only has two hybrids.

The Next-Gen Mazda CX-5

Mazda has big plans for the next generation CX-5. Considering that some people thought that the CX-5 was on its way out, it’s a bit of a surprise that a whole new generation is coming. What’s even more interesting is that Mazda intends to develop their own hybrid powertrain. This plan is detailed in their 2024 financial results, where it states they are going to equip the next CX-5 with a hybrid.

What Do We Know About the Powertrain?

Mazda has not released any details about the engine, although CEO Masahiro Moro said it would be an original. He indicated that it would be an enhanced version of the SkyActive engine. The current CX-5 uses a 2.5-liter version of the SkyActive engine, so it is likely that the hybrid version will stick with this displacement.
The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder generates 187 horsepower and gets 186 pound-feet of torque, and there’s a turbo version with 256 horsepower. If you’re wondering if the new hybrid SkyActive will be a traditional hybrid or a plug-in hybrid, you’ll have to wait a little longer. For now, Mazda is keeping that information to itself.

So the CX-50 Is Going Hybrid, too

The hybrid CX-50 is not as much of a surprise as the CX-5. Mazda builds this model in a plant jointly owned with Toyota. The Toyota Corolla Cross and Corolla Cross Hybrid are built in the plant, so it makes sense for Mazda to borrow the hybrid set up for the CX-50.
The next-gen CX-50 hybrid is expected to share its exterior look with the gas-powered version, and inside it will have the same sporty look with high-quality cabin features. You can expect to see a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, navigation, and features such as dual-zone automatic climate control and a premium Bose stereo system.

The Current Mazda CX-5 That We Know and Love

The CX-5 is one of Mazda’s most popular models. Dealers continue to sell thousands of them every year. Even though the CX-50 arrived with similar features and style Mazda kept the CX-5 around, and buyers love it. It has room for five people, and if you have one of the top-level models, you’ll feel like you’re driving a luxury brand vehicle. These have heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and plush leather upholstery.
If you like a sportier feel for your Mazda, the Turbo Signature has premium brown leather upholstery, wood trim, and silver exterior trim elements.
If you’ve been waiting for your favorite Mazda to arrive with a hybrid powertrain, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The next generation Mazda CX-5 is confirmed and in development.
